We Were Prepared is a great tribute to the Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts who rose above their regular call of duty to serve a community in dire need. This book shares stories and personal insights on how the lessons taught through Scouting enabled these young Scouts to render aid in response to the deadliest industrial accident in American history. This tragedy struck less than ten miles from my home. So the stories I heard of the Scouts’ heroic deeds, fortified my desire to become a Girl Scout to help serve others.
I appreciate Frank’s memorializing the stories that have been told through the years by paying homage to the efforts of those Boy and Girl Scouts who responded to the Texas City Disaster of 1947 and to the Scout Motto “Be Prepared”.
Honorable Kay Bailey Hutchison – Former U.S. Senator – Girl Scout
The Texas City Disaster is documented in numerous historical accounts. However, We Were Prepared is the only one that describes the great community service that Scouts performed, in a very tough situation, by being trained and ready for this catastrophic event. They stepped up like real professionals and validated the meaning of the Scout Motto “Be Prepared”. I salute them for their service to Scouting and to their community.
Ray Holbrook – Galveston County Judge 28 years – Eagle Scout – Silver Beaver Award – Lifetime Achievement Friends of Scouting Award from the Bay Area Council, Boy Scouts of America – Distinguished Alumni Texas A & M University
We Were Prepared captures, with words and pictures, the grim devastation of the Texas City disaster and the important role that the Boy and Girl Scouts played in the immediate relief and recovery efforts. It’s a story for all ages…people who were not around in April 1947 and for those of us who remember it well.
Gerry Griffin – Eagle Scout and Former Director of the NASA Johnson Space Center
This book clearly illustrates the importance of emergency preparedness that we are to this day teaching young Scouts. Being prepared certainly served those Scouts well on those fateful days in 1947 and continued to serve them well throughout their distinguished careers. We Were Prepared, which reaffirms what is great about our country, is a must read for all former and current Scouts.
Robert E. Harmon– Retired Chairman and CEO of Harmon Industries –Former Board Member of Heart of America Council, Boy Scouts of America – Eagle Scout and Silver Beaver Recipient
Having served as a Damage Control Officer, in charge of damage control teams aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer, we always had to be prepared for any eventuality; just like the Boy Scout Motto “Be Prepared” continues today as an inspiration for all age groups. We Were Prepared is a story that has to be told.
